Pirates originally arose out of the greed of nations who often made war with another country because they wanted what was not theirs. Many countries didn’t have navies and so hired privateers, who were often pirates anyway, to fight for them for wages. After wars there was not the same need for the navies and as many ships had been involved in what their country called legitimate piracy, many people continued that piracy but for their own pockets. There were many myths surrounding piracy.

England, Holland and France wanted the wealth  Spain had in the Caribbean and so employed privateers and pirates to set up colonies there to take some of Spain’s wealth by force. This encouraged others to take up piracy for their own purposes and many myths of strange happenings arose around these times.
